About

Who:  Harley Ellenberger | Dataviz Purist | Tableau Enthusiast | At my day job I work as vice president of Analytics for Kantar Media Ad Intelligence.

What:  My personal take on how to transform different data visualizations into effective bar chart displays.

How: Ineffective displays of data are common these days.  I read dozens of blogs and news sites every day and choose content that I think could use a bar chart makeover.  Most of my bar chart makeovers will be done using Tableau and posted to the Tableau Public site.

Why:  Today we have access to an overwhelming variety of dataviz tools.  This variety coupled with a limited understanding of effective data presentation can result in "data puke". Too often I see data presentations and visual data displays that are well researched but not well executed.  Research and data collection are important, but so too is the output.  Quality dataviz tools in the wrong hands usually leads to ineffective output.  My goal is to show that the simple bar chart can be applied to a wide range of use cases.  Furthermore, by following the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) maxim, you'll avoid many of the pitfalls associated with randomly selecting the coolest looking chart type for your data.
